English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Waki', from al-Mas'udi, from 'Uthman al-Thaqafi or al-Hasan ibn Sa'd — al-Mas'udi was uncertain — from 'Abda al-Nahdi — that 'Abdullah said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah has not forbidden any prohibition except that He already knew someone among you would violate it. Indeed, I am holding onto your waistbands [hujaz] lest you tumble into the Fire as moths — or flies — tumble [into a flame].' — [Another chain runs] via Abu Qatan, from al-Mas'udi, from al-Hasan ibn Sa'd, from 'Abda al-Nahdi — with the same text. Likewise said Yazid and Abu Kamil, from al-Hasan ibn Sa'd. Rawh said: al-Mas'udi narrated from Abu al-Mughira, from al-Hasan ibn Sa'd — and he said: 'moths or flies.'
