English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Yazid, from al-Mas'udi, from Jami' ibn Shaddad, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi 'Alqama al-Thaqafi — that 'Abdullah said: 'When we returned from the expedition of al-Hudaybiya, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Who will keep watch over us tonight? I said: I [will] — and this was repeated several times, each time I said: I will, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Then it is you. So I kept watch over them until the approach of dawn overtook me, [and I recalled] the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: You will fall asleep — so I fell asleep. Nothing woke us except the heat of the sun on our backs. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose and performed as he normally would — wudu' and the two rak'ahs of Fajr — then led us in the Fajr prayer. When he finished, he said: Had Allah (عز وجل) willed that you not sleep, you would not have slept — but He willed that you serve as a precedent for those after you. And this is the ruling for whoever sleeps [through a prayer] or forgets [it]. Then the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people's camels scattered. The people went out in search of them and brought back their camels — except the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: Go this way. I went where he directed and found her lead-rope coiled around a tree — coiled so tightly that no hand could have untied it. I brought her to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, by the One Who sent you with the truth as a Prophet — I found her lead-rope coiled around a tree in a way no hand could have untied it. Then Surah al-Fath was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Indeed, We have granted you a clear triumph [48:1].'
