English Translation
Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, Abu 'Aqil narrated to us, Mujalid narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, from Masruq who said: We were sitting with 'Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud) رضي الله عنه in the mosque while he was teaching us the Quran. A man came to him and said: 'O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, has there come to you from among the signs of the Hour something you recognize?' He said: 'Yes. By the One in whose Hand is my soul, among them is that trust (amanah) will diminish, tithes will be given from the spoils, zakah will be considered as a penalty, and knowledge will be sought for other than the religion.'
