English Translation
Yunus narrated to us, Layth narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad who narrated from his father that Ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه narrated to him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer with them. The narrator said — I do not know whether he increased or decreased — and when he gave the taslim, it was said to him: O Messenger of Allah, has something new occurred regarding the prayer? He said: 'What is it?' They said: You prayed such and such. He then bent his legs, faced the qiblah, prostrated two prostrations of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw), then gave the taslim. Then he turned to us and said: 'If something new had occurred regarding the prayer, I would have informed you. But I am only a human being; I forget as you forget. So when I forget, remind me. And when any of you has doubt in his prayer, let him estimate what is correct and complete his prayer accordingly, then give the taslim, then perform two prostrations.'
