حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ إِنِّي لَمُسْتَتِرٌ بِأَسْتَارِ الْكَعْبَةِ إِذْ جَاءَ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ ثَقَفِيٌّ وَخَتْنَاهُ قُرَشِيَّانِ كَثِيرٌ شَحْمُ بُطُونِهِمْ قَلِيلٌ فِقْهُ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَتَحَدَّثُوا بَيْنَهُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمْ تُرَى أَنَّ الل
َّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَسْمَعُ مَا قُلْنَا قَالَ الْآخَرُ أُرَاهُ يَسْمَعُ إِذَا رَفَعْنَا وَلَا يَسْمَعُ إِذَا خَفَضْنَا قَالَ الْآخَرَانِ كَانَ يَسْمَعُ شَيْئًا مِنْهُ إِنَّهُ لَيَسْمَعُهُ كُلَّهُ قَالَ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ { وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُونَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ عَلَيْكُمْ سَمْعُكُمْ حَتَّى الْخَاسِرِينَ }

English Translation
'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from al-A'mash, from 'Umarah, from Wahb ibn Rabi'ah, from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه who said: 'I was hiding behind the curtains of the Ka'bah when three people came — a Qurayshi man and two of his in-laws from Thaqif, or a Thaqifi man and two of his in-laws from Quraysh. They had much belly fat and little understanding. One of them said: Do you think Allah hears what we say? Another said: He hears us if we speak aloud but not if we speak softly. The other said: If He hears us when we speak aloud, then He hears us when we speak softly. So Allah عز وجل revealed: {And you did not used to hide yourselves, lest your hearing and your sight and your skins testify against you} [Fussilat 41:22].'
