حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْ

بَةُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْأَحْوَصِ يَقُولُ كَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ

English Translation
'Affan narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq who said: I heard Abu al-Ahwas saying: 'Abdullah used to say from the Prophet ﷺ: 'If I were to take a khalil (intimate friend), I would have taken Abu Bakr as a khalil. But he is my brother and companion. And Allah عز وجل has taken your companion as a khalil' — meaning himself ﷺ.
