English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Rawh and 'Affan, from Hammad ibn Salama (and 'Affan says: from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib), from Murra al-Hamdani — that Ibn Mas'ud narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: 'Our Lord (عز وجل) marvels at two men: a man who rises from his bed and bedding, from among his family and community, to [perform] his prayer — so our Lord says: O My angels, look at My servant, he has risen from his bed, his bedding, from among his community and family, [going] to his prayer out of desire for what is with Me and fear of what is with Me. And a man who fought in the way of Allah (عز وجل): his companions fled, and he knew what was upon him for fleeing and what reward was in returning, so he returned [to fight] until his blood was shed, out of desire for what is with Me and fear of what is with Me. And Allah (عز وجل) says to His angels: Look at My servant — he returned out of desire for what is with Me and fear of what is with Me, until his blood was shed.'
