English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Hisham ibn 'Abd al-Malik, from Abu 'Awana, from Husayn, from Ibrahim, from Nahik ibn Sinan al-Sulami — that he came to 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and said: 'I read the al-Mufassal surahs last night in a single rak'a.' He [Ibn Mas'ud] said: '[You rattled through them] like rattling off poetry — or scattering them like inferior dates [al-daqal]. Indeed they were separated [as individual surahs] so that you would separate them [recite them distinctly, one per rak'a]. I know the paired surahs [al-naza'ir] that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pair — twenty surahs — al-Rahman and al-Najm [together in one rak'a], according to Ibn Mas'ud's arrangement, two surahs per rak'a. And he mentioned al-Dukhan and 'Amma [together] in one rak'a.'
