حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجَابِرِ التَّيْمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْمَاجِدِ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَذَكَرَ الْقِصَّةَ وَأَنْشَأَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ أَوَّلَ رَجُلٍ قُطِعَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ أَوْ مِنْ الْمُسْلِمِينَ رَجُلٌ أُتِيَ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ هَذَا سَرَقَ فَكَأَنَّمَا أُسِفَّ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَمَادًا فَ
قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيْ يَقُولُ مَا لَكَ فَقَالَ وَمَا يَمْنَعُنِي وَأَنْتُمْ أَعْوَانُ الشَّيْطَانِ عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ وَاللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَفُوٌّ يُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ وَلَا يَنْبَغِي لِوَالِي أَمْرٍ أَنْ يُؤْتَى بِحَدٍّ إِلَّا أَقَامَهُ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ { وَلْيَعْفُوا وَلْيَصْفَحُوا أَلَا تُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ } قَالَ يَحْيَى أَمْلَاهُ عَلَيْنَا سُفْيَانُ إِمْلَاءً

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Yahya ibn Adam, from Sufyan, from Yahya ibn 'Abdillah al-Jabir al-Taymi, from Abi al-Majid — that a man came to 'Abdullah and he mentioned an account, then narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said: 'The first person to have his hand cut off in Islam — or among the Muslims — was a man who was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, this man has stolen. It was as if the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been dusted with ash [from shock]. Some said: O Messenger of Allah, what is wrong? He said: What prevents me from it, when you are helpers of the Shaytan against your companion? Allah (عز وجل) is Forgiving and loves forgiveness. It is not right for an authority to have a hadd penalty brought before him and not carry it out. Then he recited: "And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful" [24:22].' Yahya said: Sufyan dictated this to us.
