English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Abd al-Samad and 'Affan, from Hammad, from 'Asim, from Zirr — that Ibn Mas'ud said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited Surah al-Ahqaf [46] to me, and had also recited it to another man. That man differed from me in one verse. I asked him: Who recited it to you? He said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So I came to him while he was among a group of people and said: O Messenger of Allah, did you not recite to me such-and-such a verse? He said: Yes. I said: Then this man claims you recited it to him in such-and-such a way. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed. Then the man who was with him said: Let each man recite as he heard, for it was disagreement that destroyed those before you. 'Abdullah said: By Allah, I don't know whether the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to say that or whether he said it himself.' [A second chain] via Yahya ibn Adam, from Abu Bakr, from 'Asim, from Zirr, from 'Abdullah, from the Prophet ﷺ with the same meaning — saying: He became angry and his face flushed and said: 'Indeed what destroyed those before you was disagreement.'
