English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Yahya ibn Hammad, from Abu 'Awana, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqama — that 'Abdullah said: 'We were sitting on a Friday evening in the mosque. A man from the Ansar said: If one of us sees a man with his wife and kills him, you [the authorities] will kill him [in retaliation]; if he speaks [and accuses her] you will lash him; and if he stays silent, he stays silent in rage. By Allah, if I am well in the morning I will ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this. He did ask him: O Messenger of Allah, if one of us sees a man with his wife — if he kills him you will kill him, if he speaks you will lash him, and if he stays silent he stays silent in rage. O Allah, decide! And the verse of li'an [mutual imprecation] was revealed. That man was the first to be put to trial with it.'
