Hadith #575

English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Sufyan, from al-A'mash, Mansur, Husayn ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, Abu Hashim, and Hammad, from Abi Wa'il; and from Abi Ishaq, from Abi al-Ahwas and al-Aswad — that 'Abdullah said: 'We did not know what to say in the prayer; we used to say: Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il. Then the Prophet ﷺ taught us and said: Indeed Allah is al-Salam [the Peace]. When you sit after two rak'as, say: Al-tahiyyatu lillahi wal-salawatu wal-tayyibat, al-salamu 'alayka ayyuha al-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, al-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadi llahi al-salihin [All greetings of honor are for Allah, and all prayers and good deeds; peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings; peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah].' Abu Wa'il says in his narration from 'Abdullah from the Prophet ﷺ: 'When you say it, it reaches every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth.' Abu Ishaq says in his narration of 'Abdullah from the Prophet ﷺ: 'When you say it, it reaches every near angel, every sent prophet, or every righteous servant.' [Then say:] I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.'
