حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى وَابْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ دَخَلَ الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ي
َوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَهُوَ يَتَغَدَّى فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ ادْنُ لِلْغَدَاءِ قَالَ أَوَلَيْسَ الْيَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ قَالَ وَتَدْرِي مَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ إِنَّمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصُومُهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ رَمَضَانُ فَلَمَّا أُنْزِلَ رَمَضَانُ تُرِكَ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Ya'la and Ibn Abi Za'ida, from al-A'mash, from 'Umara, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid — that he said: 'Al-Ash'ath ibn Qays entered upon 'Abdullah on the day of 'Ashura while he was eating lunch and said: Come, Abu Muhammad, and join us for lunch. He replied: Is today not 'Ashura? He ['Ash'ath] said: Do you know what the day of 'Ashura is? the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast it before the obligation of Ramadan was revealed; when Ramadan was revealed, it was abandoned.'
