English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Ya'la, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqama — that he said: 'We were sitting with 'Abdullah, and with us was Zayd ibn Hudayr. Khabbab entered upon us and said: O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, do all of these recite as you recite? He said: If you wish, I will order one of them to recite for you. He said: Yes. So he said to me: Recite. Ibn Hudayr said: You order him to recite when he is not our best reciter? He ['Abdullah] said: By Allah, if you wish I will inform you of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about your people and his people. So I recited fifty verses of [Surah] Maryam. Khabbab said: You did well. 'Abdullah said: I do not recite anything that he ['Alqama] has not [himself] recited. Then 'Abdullah said to Khabbab: Has the time not come for this ring to be removed? He said: You will not see it on me after today — and the ring was of gold.'
