English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Waki', from Sufyan, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqama — that 'Abdullah said: 'Allah has cursed those women who tattoo and those who have themselves tattooed, those who pluck their eyebrows, and those who file their teeth for beautification — those who alter the creation of Allah.' This reached a woman from Banu Asad called Umm Ya'qub. She came to him and said: 'I have read all that is between the two covers [of the Quran] and did not find what you said.' He said: 'Did you not find: 'Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it' [59:7]?' She said: 'I think it [exists] in some of your own household.' He said: 'Go and look.' She went and looked, then came and said: 'I did not see anything.' 'Abdullah said: 'If she had [that practice], she would not remain with us.'
