Hadith #187

English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Waki', from Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu 'Ubayda — that 'Abdullah said: 'I reached Abu Jahl on the day of Badr — his leg had been struck and he was lying prostrate, warding off people with his sword. I said: Praise be to Allah who has humiliated you, O enemy of Allah! He said: He is just a man killed by his own people. I then began striking him with my sword — which was not very sharp — and hit his hand. His sword fell and I took it and struck him with it until I killed him. Then I went out until I came to the Prophet ﷺ — as if being lifted off the earth — and told him. He said: By Allah, the One other than Whom there is no god? — and he repeated it three times. I said: By Allah, the One other than Whom there is no god. He then walked out with me until he stood over him and said: Praise be to Allah who has humiliated you, O enemy of Allah. This one was the Pharaoh of this ummah.' — [Ahmad's] father adds via Abu Ishaq, from Abu 'Ubayda — 'Abdullah said: And [the Prophet ﷺ] gave me his [Abu Jahl's] sword as a spoil.
