English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Abu Qatan, from al-Mas'udi, from Sa'id ibn 'Amr, from Abu 'Ubayda — that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'When is the Night of Decree [Laylat al-Qadr]?' He said: 'Who among you remembers the night of al-Sahbawat [the reddish or clear night]?' 'Abdullah said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom — and there were dates in my hand which I was using for my pre-dawn meal, sheltering from the approaching dawn behind the back of my camel saddle — and that was when the crescent moon first appeared.' [indicating it was the night of the 23rd of Ramadan]
