Hadith #279

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَعَلْقَمَةُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ بِالْهَاجِرَةِ فَلَمَّا مَالَتْ الشَّمْسُ أَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ وَقُمْنَا خَلْفَهُ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي وَبِ
يَدِ صَاحِبِي فَجَعَلَنَا عَنْ نَاحِيَتَيْهِ وَقَامَ بَيْنَنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصْنَعُ إِذَا كَانُوا ثَلَاثَةً ثُمَّ صَلَّى بِنَا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ إِنَّهَا سَتَكُونُ أَئِمَّةٌ يُؤَخِّرُونَ الصَّلَاةَ عَنْ مَوَاقِيتِهَا فَلَا تَنْتَظِرُوهُمْ بِهَا وَاجْعَلُوا الصَّلَاةَ مَعَهُمْ سُبْحَةً

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad, from his father — that he said: ''Alqama and I entered upon 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud at midday. When the sun declined, he called the iqama for prayer and we stood behind him. He took me by one hand and my companion by the other, placed us on either side of him, and stood between us. Then he said: "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do when they were three." He then prayed with us. When he finished, he said: "There will be imams who delay the prayer from its proper time — do not wait for them for [their version of] it. Treat the prayer you pray with them as a supererogatory [nafl] prayer."'
