English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Ya'qub, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad al-Nakha'i, from his father — that he said: ''Alqama and I entered upon 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud at midday. He called the iqama for Zuhr prayer and we stood behind him. He took me by one hand and my uncle ['Alqama] by the other, placed one of us on his right and the other on his left, and stood between us — so we formed a single row behind him. He then said: "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do when they were three." He then prayed with us. When he went into ruku', he made tatbiq [clapping hands between knees], pressing his forearms against his thighs and inserting his palms between his knees. When he gave the salam, he turned to us and said: "There will be imams who delay the prayer from its proper time — when they do so, do not wait for them for [their version of] it. Treat the prayer you pray with them as a supererogatory [nafl] prayer."'
