English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Ya'qub, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, from al-Harith ibn Fudayl al-Ansari, from Sufyan ibn Abi al-'Awja' al-Sulami, from Abu Shurayh al-Khuza'i — that he said: 'The sun eclipsed during the reign of 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, while 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud was in Medina. 'Uthman came out and led the people in [eclipse] prayer — two rak'as with two prostrations in each rak'a. 'Uthman then departed and went into his house. 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud sat by the chamber of 'A'isha, and we sat with him. He said: "the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us to pray at the time of solar and lunar eclipse. When you see one occurring, hasten to prayer — for if it is the thing you fear, you will not be caught off guard; and if it is not, then you have done well and gained merit."'
