English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Hasan ibn Musa, from Zuhayr, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Alqama ibn Qays — [though he did not hear it directly from him; a man asked him about a hadith of 'Alqama, and it is this hadith] — that 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud came to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari at his house, and prayer time arrived. Abu Musa said: "Step forward, O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman — for you are older and more learned." He said: "No, you step forward — for we have come to you in your house and your mosque, so you are more entitled." Abu Musa stepped forward and removed his sandals. When he gave the salam, [Ibn Mas'ud] said: "Why did you remove them? Are you in the Sacred Valley [al-wadi al-muqaddas]? I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray in [leather] socks and sandals."
