حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ سَمِعَ سَالِمًا عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَمِعَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْ

هُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ وَأَبِي وَأَبِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللَّهِ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا ذَاكِرًا وَلَا آثِرًا

English Translation

Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, who heard Salim from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard 'Umar رضي الله عنه saying: 'By my father! By my father!' He said: 'Indeed, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers.' 'Umar said: 'By Allah, I never swore by them again after that — neither from myself nor quoting from another.'
