حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنِي مُسْلِمُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُعَاوِيِّ قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَقَلَّبْتُ الْحَصَى فَقَالَ لَا تُقَلِّبْ ال

ْحَصَى فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلَكِنْ كَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَفْعَلُ كَانَ يُحَرِّكُهُ هَكَذَا قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد اللَّهِ يَعْنِي مَسْحَةً

English Translation

Sufyan narrated to us, Muslim ibn Abi Maryam narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Mu'awi who said: I prayed beside Ibn 'Umar and I was turning pebbles (in my hand during the prayer). He said: 'Do not turn pebbles, for turning pebbles is from the Shaytan. Rather, do what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do — place your right hand upon your left thigh.'
