حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ قَرْنِي ثُمَّ ال
َّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثَلَاثًا أَوْ أَرْبَعًا ثُمَّ يَجِيءُ قَوْمٌ تَسْبِقُ شَهَادَةُ أَحَدِهِمْ يَمِينَهُ وَيَمِينُهُ شَهَادَتَهُ قَالَ وَكَانَ أَصْحَابُنَا يَضْرِبُونَا وَنَحْنُ صِبْيَانٌ عَلَى الشَّهَادَةِ وَالْعَهْدِ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Abd al-Rahman, from Sufyan, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from 'Abida — from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: 'The best of people is my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them' — [saying it] three or four times. 'Then there will come a people whose testimony precedes their oath and whose oath precedes their testimony.' And ['Abdullah] said: Our companions used to strike us [as discipline] when we were children [to teach us the gravity] of oaths and testimony.
