Hadith #83

English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Abd al-Rahman, from Sufyan, from Mansur, al-A'mash, and Wasil, from Abi Wa'il, from 'Amr ibn Shura'bil — that 'Abdullah said: 'I said: O Messenger of Allah, which sin is greatest before Allah (عز وجل)? He said: That you set up a rival for Allah (عز وجل) while He created you. I said: Then what? He said: Then that you kill your child for fear that he will eat from your food.' — 'Abd al-Rahman said on one occasion: 'that he eat with you.' — 'I said: Then what? He said: That you commit adultery with your neighbor's wife.' — [Second chain] via Bahz ibn Asad, from Shu'ba, from Wasil al-Ahdab — I heard Abu Wa'il say: 'Abdullah said: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Which sin is the greatest? — and he mentioned it. — [Third chain] via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba, from Wasil, from Abi Wa'il, from 'Abdullah — he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — and he mentioned it. — [Fourth chain] via 'Ali ibn Hafs, from Warqa', from Mansur, from Abi Wa'il, from 'Amr ibn Shura'bil, from 'Abdullah — he said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, which sin is the greatest — and he mentioned it. Then he recited: 'And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity...' to '...a humiliating punishment' [25:68-69].
