حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي نَافِعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ لَمَّا مَاتَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ جَاءَ ابْنُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَعْطِنِي قَمِيصَكَ حَتَّى أُكَفِّنَهُ فِيهِ وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُ فَأَعْطَاهُ قَمِيصَهُ وَقَالَ آذِنِّي بِهِ فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ قَا
لَ يَعْنِي عُمَرَ قَدْ نَهَاكَ اللَّهُ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ فَقَالَ أَنَا بَيْنَ خِيرَتَيْنِ { اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ } فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى { وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا } قَالَ فَتُرِكَتْ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْهِمْ
Isnad Chain
English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Yahya, from 'Ubayd Allah, from Nafi' — that he said: 'When 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy died, his son came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, give me your shirt to shroud him in it, and pray over him and seek forgiveness for him." [the Prophet ﷺ] gave him his shirt and said: "Notify me when [the burial is ready]." When [the Prophet ﷺ] went to pray over him, 'Umar said: "Has not Allah forbidden you from praying over the hypocrites?" He said: "I have a choice between two [options]: 'Seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness for them'" [9:80]. He prayed over him. Allah then revealed: "And do not pray over any of them who dies, ever" [9:84]. From then on, praying over them was abandoned.'
