حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حُسَيْنٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ لَمَّا تَأَيَّمَتْ حَفْصَةُ وَكَانَتْ تَحْتَ خُنَيْسِ بْنِ حُذَافَةَ لَقِيَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ عُثْمَانَ فَعَرَضَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ مَا لِي فِي النِّسَاءِ حَاجَةٌ وَسَأَنْظُرُ فَلَقِيَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَعَرَضَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَسَكَتَ فَوَجَدَ عُمَرُ فِي نَفْسِهِ عَلَى أَبِي
بَكْرٍ فَإِذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ خَطَبَهَا فَلَقِيَ عُمَرُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ عَرَضْتُهَا عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فَرَدَّنِي وَإِنِّي عَرَضْتُهَا عَلَيْكَ فَسَكَتَّ عَنِّي فَلَأَنَا عَلَيْكَ كُنْتُ أَشَدَّ غَضَبًا مِنِّي عَلَى عُثْمَانَ وَقَدْ رَدَّنِي فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِنَّهُ قَدْ كَانَ ذَكَرَ مِنْ أَمْرِهَا وَكَانَ سِرًّا فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أُفْشِيَ السِّرَّ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Yazid ibn Harun, from Sufyan ibn Husayn, from al-Zuhri, from Salim — that he said: 'When Hafsa was widowed — she had been the wife of Khunays ibn Hudhafa — 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) met 'Uthman and proposed her to him. 'Uthman said: "I have no need of women at present, but I will consider it." He then met Abu Bakr and proposed her to him, but Abu Bakr remained silent. 'Umar felt more hurt at Abu Bakr's silence than at 'Uthman's refusal. [Meanwhile] the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her. 'Umar later met Abu Bakr and said: "I proposed her to 'Uthman and he declined; I proposed her to you and you were silent — and I was more aggrieved with you than with 'Uthman, who at least openly turned me down." Abu Bakr said: "The reason I kept silent is that [the Prophet ﷺ] had mentioned her — and it was a secret, and I was reluctant to divulge a secret."'
