Hadith #187

English Translation

It was narrated — via Mu'adh, from Ibn 'Awn — that he said: 'I wrote to Nafi' asking whether the call [to Islam] was made before fighting. He wrote back to me: That was [the practice] at the beginning of Islam — but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ attacked Banu al-Mustaliq while they were unaware, their livestock being watered at a water source. He killed their fighters, took their captives, and on that day obtained Juwayriya bint al-Harith. And 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) narrated this hadith to me — and he was in that army.'
