Hadith #189
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ مَثَلَ الْمُؤْمِنِ مَثَلُ شَجَرَةٍ
لَا يَسْقُطُ وَرَقُهَا فَمَا هِيَ قَالَ فَقَالُوا وَقَالُوا فَلَمْ يُصِيبُوا وَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَقُولَ هِيَ النَّخْلَةُ فَاسْتَحْيَيْتُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هِيَ النَّخْلَةُ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Yazid ibn Harun, from Shu'ba, from Muharib ibn Dithar — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The example of the believer is like a tree whose leaves do not fall — what is it?' The people gave various answers but could not identify it. [Ibn 'Umar said:] 'I wanted to say it is the date palm, but I felt shy.' Then the Prophet ﷺ said: 'It is the date palm.'
