حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ يَقُصُّ وَعِنْدَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَثَلُ الْمُنَافِقِ كَشَاةٍ مِنْ بَيْنِ رَبِيضَيْنِ إِذَا أَتَتْ هَؤُلَاءِ نَطَحْنَهَا وَإِذَا أَتَتْ هَؤُلَاءِ ن
َطَحْنَهَا فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ لَيْسَ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَشَاةٍ بَيْنَ غَنَمَيْنِ قَالَ فَاحْتَفَظَ الشَّيْخُ وَغَضِبَ فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَمَا إِنِّي لَوْ لَمْ أَسْمَعْهُ لَمْ أَرُدَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْكَ

English Translation
It was narrated — via Yazid, from al-Mas'udi, from Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn 'Ali — that while 'Ubayd ibn 'Umayr was delivering a talk, 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) was present. 'Ubayd ibn 'Umayr said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: \"The example of the hypocrite is like a sheep between two flocks — when it comes to one, they butt it; and when it comes to the other, they butt it.\"' Ibn 'Umar said: 'That is not what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: \"like a sheep between two flocks.\"' The old man [Ubayd ibn 'Umayr] became agitated and angry. When 'Abdullah saw that, he said: 'I would not have corrected you had I not heard it myself.'
