Hadith #287

English Translation

It was narrated — via al-Walid ibn Muslim, from Sa'id ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz and Makhlad ibn Yazid, from Sulayman ibn Musa, from Nafi' (freed slave of Ibn 'Umar) — that he said: 'Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) heard the sound of a shepherd's pipe. He put his fingers in his ears, swerved his riding animal off the road, and kept saying: \"O Nafi', can you still hear it?\" I would say: Yes. He would continue until I said: No. Then he removed his hands, returned the animal to the road, and said: \"I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — when he heard the sound of a shepherd's pipe — do this very thing.\"'
