English Translation

It was narrated — via 'Abd al-Rahman, from Sufyan, from Firas, from Abu Salih, from Zaadhan — that he said: 'I was with Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما). He called one of his slaves and freed him, then said: "My reward for this is not worth this much" — picking something up — "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever beats a slave with a punishment he did not deserve, or wronged him, or slapped him' — ['Abd al-Rahman was uncertain about the exact phrasing] — 'his expiation is to free him."'
