Hadith #184
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ حَدَّثَنِي مُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ حَدَّثَنِي سَالِمٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ الْكَلْبِيِّ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَقُولُ مَا كُنَّا نَدْعُوهُ إِلَّا زَيْدَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ حَتَّى نَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ { ادْعُوهُمْ لِآبَائِهِمْ هُوَ أَقْسَطُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ }
English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Affan, from Wuhayb, from Musa ibn 'Uqba, from Salim — from Zayd ibn Haritha al-Kalbi, the mawla of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — that 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar used to say: 'We never called him anything but Zayd ibn Muhammad — until the Quran was revealed: "Call them after their [real] fathers; that is more just in the sight of Allah" [33:5].'
