حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الْعَمِّيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الصِّدِّيقِ النَّاجِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ نِسَاءَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ
عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَأَلْنَهُ عَنْ الذَّيْلِ فَقَالَ اجْعَلْنَهُ شِبْرًا فَقُلْنَ إِنَّ شِبْرًا لَا يَسْتُرُ مِنْ عَوْرَةٍ فَقَالَ اجْعَلْنَهُ ذِرَاعًا فَكَانَتْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ إِذَا أَرَادَتْ أَنْ تَتَّخِذَ دِرْعًا أَرْخَتْ ذِرَاعًا فَجَعَلَتْهُ ذَيْلًا

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Hajjaj, from Sharik, from Mutarrif, from Zayd al-'Ammi, from Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji — that the wives of the Prophet ﷺ asked him about the trailing hem [al-dhayl]. He said: 'Make it one span.' They said: 'A span does not conceal the [lower] 'awra.' He said: 'Make it one cubit.' And whenever one of them wished to make a dress [dir'], she would let out one cubit [at the bottom] to make it a trailing hem.
