English Translation
'Affan narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, 'Uthman ibn Abdullah ibn Mawhab narrated to us who said: 'A man from Egypt came for Hajj to the House. He saw some people sitting and said: "Who are these people?" They said: "They are Quraysh." He said: "Who is the elder among them?" They said: "Ibn 'Umar." He came to him and said: "I want to ask you about something, so tell me. Do you know that 'Uthman fled on the day of Uhud?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Do you know that he was absent from Badr?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Do you know that he was absent from the pledge of Ridwan?" He said: "Yes." The man said: "Allahu Akbar!" Ibn 'Umar said: "Come, let me explain to you. As for his fleeing on the day of Uhud, I bear witness that Allah pardoned him. As for his absence from Badr, he was married to the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and she was ill, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him to stay with her and gave him his share and reward. As for his absence from the Pledge of Ridwan, had there been anyone more honored in the valley of Makkah than 'Uthman, the Prophet ﷺ would have sent him instead. The Pledge of Ridwan was after 'Uthman had gone to Makkah, and the Prophet ﷺ said about his right hand: 'This is the hand of 'Uthman,' and struck it upon his other hand and said: 'This is for 'Uthman.' So go now, take this understanding with you."'
