Hadith #497
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَأَى حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْ اشْتَرَيْتَهَا فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوُفُودِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الل
َّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لَتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا كَسَوْتُكَهَا لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ لِتَكْسُوَهَا قَالَ فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مُشْرِكًا مِنْ أُمِّهِ بِمَكَّةَ

English Translation
Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd narrated to us, 'Ubaydullah narrated to us, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما), that 'Umar saw a striped silk garment being sold at the door of the mosque and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if you bought this and wore it on Fridays and for receiving delegations!' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'This is only worn by one who has no share [in the Hereafter].' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given some of those garments and sent one to 'Umar. 'Umar said: 'How can I wear it when you said what you said about it?' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'I did not give it to you to wear it. Rather, sell it or give it to someone.' So 'Umar sent it to a brother of his in Makkah before he accepted Islam.
