حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عِيسَى وَأَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ فَلَمَّا لَقِينَا الْعَدُوَّ انْهَزَمْنَا فِي أَوَّلِ عَادِيَةٍ فَقَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ فِي نَفَرٍ لَيْلًا فَاخْتَفَي
ْنَا ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لَوْ خَرَجْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاعْتَذَرْنَا إِلَيْهِ فَخَرَجْنَا فَلَمَّا لَقِينَاهُ قُلْنَا نَحْنُ الْفَرَّارُونَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ بَلْ أَنْتُمْ الْعَكَّارُونَ وَأَنَا فِئَتُكُمْ قَالَ أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ وَأَنَا فِئَةُ كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Ishaq ibn 'Isa and Aswad ibn 'Amir, from Sharik, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla — that he said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us in an expedition. When we met the enemy, we fled at the first onset. We came to Medina with a small group at night and concealed ourselves. Then we said: "If only we would go out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and offer our excuse." So we went out, and when we met him we said: "We are the deserters [al-farrarun], O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Rather, you are the returners [al-'akkarun] — and I am your [supporting] force [fi'a]."' — Aswad ibn 'Amir [reported] the addition: '"And I am the force of every Muslim."'
