Hadith #82

English Translation

It was narrated — via Husayn ibn Muhammad, from Shayban, from Mansur, from Sa'd ibn 'Ubayda — that he said: 'I and Muhammad al-Kindi sat with 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما). Then I left and sat with Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib. My companion arrived with his face pale and his color changed. He said: "Come to me." I said: "Were we not just sitting together?" Sa'id said: "Go to your companion." I went to him and he said: "Did you not hear what Ibn 'Umar said?" I said: "What did he say?" He said: "A man came to him and said: 'O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, is it wrong for me to swear by the Ka'ba?' He said: 'Why would you swear by the Ka'ba? If you swear, swear by the Lord of the Ka'ba — for 'Umar used to swear saying: "No, by my father!" He once swore by it in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not swear by your father, nor by anything other than Allah — for whoever swears by other than Allah has committed shirk."'"'
