حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ كُنْتُ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ مِنْ سَرَايَا رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَحَاصَ النَّاسُ حَيْصَةً وَكُنْتُ فِيمَنْ حَاصَ فَقُلْنَا كَيْفَ نَصْنَعُ وَقَدْ فَرَرْنَا مِنْ الزَّحْفِ وَبُؤْنَا بِالْغَضَبِ ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لَوْ دَخَلْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ فَبِتْنَا ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لَوْ عَرَضْنَا أَ
نْفُسَنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَإِنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ تَوْبَةٌ وَإِلَّا ذَهَبْنَا فَأَتَيْنَاهُ قَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الْغَدَاةِ فَخَرَجَ فَقَالَ مَنْ الْقَوْمُ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا نَحْنُ الْفَرَّارُونَ قَالَ لَا بَلْ أَنْتُمْ الْعَكَّارُونَ أَنَا فِئَتُكُمْ وَأَنَا فِئَةُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ حَتَّى قَبَّلْنَا يَدَهُ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Hasan, from Zuhayr, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla — that he said: 'I was in one of the expeditions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The people panicked and turned back, and I was among those who turned back. We said: "How can we face [him] when we have fled from the battle and incurred [Allah's] anger?" Then we said: "What if we entered Medina and spent the night?" Then we said: "What if we presented ourselves to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — if there is a door of repentance open then [well and good]; otherwise we will go away." So we came to him before the Fajr prayer. He came out and said: "Who are these people?" We said: "We are the ones who fled [al-fararrun]." He said: "No — rather you are those who regroup [al-'akkarun]. I am your rallying party, and I am the rallying party of all Muslims."' He said: 'Then we came to him and kissed his hand.'
