It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Ubayda ibn Humayd, from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Sa'id ibn 'Amr al-Qurashi — that 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar told them from the Prophet ﷺ: 'We are an unlettered nation — we do not calculate nor write. The month is like this, and like this, and like this' — then he reduced by one on the third [gesture, indicating twenty-nine days].
