English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Abu al-Mughira, from 'Abdullah ibn Salim, from al-'Ala' ibn 'Utba al-Himsi (or al-Yahsubi), from 'Umayr ibn Hani' al-'Ansi — that he heard 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar say: 'We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he mentioned the tribulations [fitan], mentioning many of them, until he mentioned the trial of al-Ahlas. Someone said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is the trial of al-Ahlas?" He said: "It is the trial of flight and plunder. Then the trial of prosperity [al-Sarra'] — whose entry or whose smoke comes from beneath the feet of a man from my household who claims he is from me but is not from me — for my true allies are the God-fearing. Then the people will agree upon a man [as unstable] as a hip set upon a rib. Then the trial of al-Duhayma' [the pitch-dark tribulation], which will not spare a single member of this ummah without striking him. When it is said [it has ended], it will continue. A man will wake up in it a believer and sleep a disbeliever, until the people are divided into two camps: a camp of faith with no hypocrisy in it, and a camp of hypocrisy with no faith in it. When that happens, await the Dajjal that very day or the next."'
