Hadith #119
Arabic Text
وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام سَأَلَ اللَّهَ ثَلَاثًا أَعْطَاهُ اثْنَتَيْنِ وَنَحْنُ نَرْجُو أَنْ تَكُونَ لَهُ الثَّالِثَةُ فَسَأَلَهُ حُكْمًا يُصَادِفُ حُكْمَهُ فَأَعْطَاهُ اللَّهُ إِيَّاهُ وَسَأَلَهُ مُلْكًا لَا يَنْبَغِي لِأَحَدٍ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ وَسَأَلَهُ أَيُّمَا رَجُلٍ خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ لَا يُرِيدُ إِلَّا الصَّلَاةَ فِي هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ خَرَجَ مِنْ خَطِيئَتِهِ مِثْلَ يَوْمِ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّهُ فَنَحْنُ نَرْجُو أَنْ يَكُونَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَدْ أَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ
English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — [continuation of the preceding chain] — that he said: 'And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Indeed Sulayman ibn Dawud (عليه السلام) asked Allah for three things — He granted him two and we hope the third was also granted. He asked for a judgment that agrees with Allah's judgment — and He granted it. And he asked for a kingdom that befits no one after him — and He granted it. And he asked that no one should come to this mosque [the Temple] intending only to pray, except that he leave it [free] from sin as the day his mother bore him — and we hope that Allah granted him that too."'
