It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Waki', from Khalifa ibn Khayyat, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather — that the Prophet ﷺ said in his sermon while leaning his back against the Ka'bah: 'A Muslim is not to be killed [in retaliation] for [killing] a disbeliever, nor is a person under a covenant [to be killed in retaliation] during his covenant period.'
