English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Waki', from Hisham ibn 'Urwa, from Fatima bint al-Mundhir, from Asma' bint Abi Bakr — that she said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded [people to pray the eclipse prayer] during a solar eclipse. He stood [in prayer] and began to weep, and he was blowing [as if blowing something away]. Then he said: \"O Lord — did You not promise me that You would not punish them while I am among them? Did You not promise me that You would not punish them while they seek forgiveness?\" When the prayer was over he said: \"I was shown [in this prayer] everything you were promised — including Paradise. I reached out my hand to take a cluster [of fruit from it] and had I grasped it you would have eaten from it until the Day of Resurrection. And I was shown the Fire — I was blowing it away from you — and I saw in it the thief of the pilgrim camel [budna] of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: a humped man [dhul-hadba]. And I saw in it a woman from Banu Da'da': a tall Himyarite woman [being punished] over a cat she had owned — she tied it [and neither fed it nor let it eat from the earth] until it died. And the sun and the moon do not eclipse for the death of anyone — but they are among the signs of Allah (عز وجل). So when you see them, hasten to the remembrance of Allah.\"'
