It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far and 'Abdullah ibn Bakr, from Sa'id, from Matar, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather — from the Prophet ﷺ: 'There is no valid divorce for a man over what he does not own, no valid emancipation over what he does not own, and no valid sale of what he does not own.'
