حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ يَعْنِي عُبَيْدَ بْنَ الْأَخْنَسِ حَدَّثَنِي الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مَاهَكَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ كُنْتُ أَكْتُبُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَسْمَعُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُرِيدُ حِفْظَهُ فَنَهَتْن
ِي قُرَيْشٌ عَنْ ذَلِكَ وَقَالُوا تَكْتُبُ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ فِي الْغَضَبِ وَالرِّضَا فَأَمْسَكْتُ حَتَّى ذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا خَرَجَ مِنْهُ إِلَّا حَقٌّ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Yahya ibn Sa'id, from Abu Malik ['Ubayd ibn al-Akhnas], from al-Walid ibn 'Abdullah, from Yusuf ibn Mahak — that he said: 'I used to write down everything I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, wanting to preserve it. The Quraysh forbade me from doing so and said: "You write it down while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ speaks in both anger and contentment [and words differ accordingly]?" So I stopped — until I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "Write! By the One in Whose hand my soul is — nothing comes from it [my mouth] except truth."'
