Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي عِمْرَانَ الْجَوْنِيِّ قَالَ كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَبَاحٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ هَجَّر
ْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا فَإِنَّا لَجُلُوسٌ إِذْ اخْتَلَفَ رَجُلَانِ فِي آيَةٍ فَارْتَفَعَتْ أَصْوَاتُهُمَا فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ الْأُمَمُ قَبْلَكُمْ بِاخْتِلَافِهِمْ فِي الْكِتَابِ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, from Hammad ibn Zayd, from Abu 'Imran al-Jawni, who said: 'Abdullah ibn Rabah wrote to me narrating from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr — that he said: 'I went [early] to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day. While we were sitting, two men disputed about a verse and their voices rose. He said: "Indeed the nations before you were destroyed by their disputing about the Book [of Allah]."'
