حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَبَّاسِ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اقْرَإِ الْقُرْآنَ فِي شَهْرٍ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَك
ْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَطْلُبُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى قَالَ اقْرَإِ الْقُرْآنَ فِي خَمْسَةِ أَيَّامٍ وَصُمْ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ الشَّهْرِ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَصُمْ أَحَبَّ الصَّوْمِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ صَوْمِ دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba, from 'Amr ibn Dinar, from Abu al-'Abbas — narrating from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'Read the Quran in a month.' He said: 'I can do more than that.' He kept requesting until he said: 'Read the Quran in five days — and fast three days a month.' He said: 'I can do more than that.' He said: 'Then fast the most beloved fast to Allah (عز وجل) — the fast of Dawud (عليه السلام), who fasted one day and broke fast one day.'
