English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Khalaf ibn al-Walid, from Ibn 'Ayyash, from Muhammad ibn Ziyad al-Alhani, from Abu Rashid al-Hubrani — that he said: 'I came to 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As and said: "Narrate to me what you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He put a document before me and said: "This is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote for me." I looked in it and found that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq had said: "O Messenger of Allah, teach me what to say in the morning and in the evening." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "O Abu Bakr, say: O Allah — Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, there is no god but You, Lord of all things and its Sovereign — I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own soul, from the evil of the devil and his shirk, and from perpetrating any evil against myself or bringing it upon any Muslim."'
