English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad ibn Mus'ab, from al-Awza'i, from Yahya, from Abu Salama ibn 'Abd al-Rahman — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'I have been informed that you pray all night and fast all day.' He said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Fast and break fast, pray and sleep — for your body has a right over you, your wife has a right over you, and your guest has a right over you. It is sufficient for you to fast three days of every month.' He said: 'I insisted and it was made strict for me.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I find I have the strength [for more].' He said: 'Then fast three days of every week.' He said: 'I insisted and it was made strict for me.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I find I have the strength.' He said: 'Fast the fast of the Prophet ﷺ of Allah, Dawud — and do not add to it.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what was the fast of Dawud?' He said: 'He fasted one day and broke fast one day.'
